Public kept in the dark on Roundup link with birth defects

Submitted by Food Democracy Now on June 7, 2011 - 9:30am

Earth Open Source revealed today that "Industry and EU regulators knew as long ago as the 1980s-1990s that Roundup, the world's best selling herbicide, causes birth defects," according to a new report.

The report, co-authored by a group of international scientists and researchers, details what industry knew - and when - along with the European Union with regard to the dangers of Monsanto's herbicide, Roundup. Even more alarming is that studies showing concerns of birth defects in lab animals were kept from the public as indicated by their report titled, "Roundup and birth defects: Is the public being kept in the dark?".

According to Claire Robinson, co-author of the report, "This looks like a thirty-year cover-up by industry and regulators and it has certainly placed the public at risk. Roundup is used not only by farmers but by home gardeners and in school grounds and other public areas, in part because of false marketing claims that it is safe."

In May of this year Food Democracy Now! release an interview with Dr. Don Huber explaining many of his grave concerns with with the use of Roundup from his experience as a plant pathologist, including stillbirths and infertility in livestock. (To view the interview, click here.)
