Grassroots movement demands that Fidelity, Vanguard and State Street divest billions in Monsanto stock holdings

April 9, 2014 (Clear Lake, Iowa) —Yesterday Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin signed the first no strings attached law requiring mandatory labeling of genetically engineered (genetically modified organism or GMO) food in the nation. This morning, the biotech industry and giant food manufacturers have indicated that they will sue the state of Vermont to stop the bill from being implemented.

Members of the Divest Monsanto Now! coalition will protest en masse in front of Fidelity Investment offices in 7 major cities across the U.S. to demand that Fidelity divest holdings of Monsanto stock in their open-ended mutual funds and investment portfolios. Fidelity currently owns more than $3.2 billion in Monsanto stock or 5.30% of the company. Together with Vanguard and State Street, these popular mutual funds control nearly 16 percent of Monsanto. As long as Monsanto continues to fight mandatory GMO labeling, they will be public enemy number one of the American farmer and consumer.

By Carey Gillam,

(Reuters) - Vermont on Thursday became the first U.S. state to mandate labeling of foods made with genetically modified organisms as Governor Peter Shumlin signed a law that is widely expected to be challenged in court by some food and agriculture companies.

The law, set to take effect July 1, 2016, would for the first time align at least a small part of the United States with more than 60 other countries that require labeling of genetically engineered foods. And it sets the stage for more than two dozen other states that are currently considering mandatory labeling of such GMO foods.

Organics is under attack! Don't let the USDA Destroy Organic Integrity and Your Family's Right to Healthy Organic Food - Take Action Now!

Actions this week by federal USDA National Organic Program staff at the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) meeting in San Antonio, Texas prove without a doubt that some federal employees care more about imposing their power and making up small rules of authority than they do about the rule of law - or maintaining the high standards of organic integrity that American consumers have come to expect from organic food.

The bill passed the house with a 114-30 vote.

For supporters of the labeling requirement, Wednesday's vote was another step in a decade-long effort they hope will sweep across the country.

"GMO seeds have not been shown to definitively increase yield potentials" and "in fact, the yields of herbicide-tolerant or insect-resistant seeds may be occasionally lower than the yields of conventional varieties."

A February 2014 U.S. Department of Agriculture report declared what many scientists already knew: There are no significant differences in yields of GMO and non-GMO crops. When asked about the USDA report, the chief technology officer for Monsanto declared, "American farmers are smart and wouldn't adapt a technology that didn't have tangible benefits."

A full suspension of the toxic main ingredient in Monsanto’s RoundUp, glyphosate, is being demanded by the Brazilian Federal Public Prosecutor in the Federal District. It is currently the most commonly used herbicide in Brazil, and negatively affects numerous crops, as well as human and ecosystem health.

Just one study conducted in Brazil on ‘glyphosate-resistant’ soybeans has shown some reprehensible results from utilizing Monsanto’s favorite venom. Brazil is currently the second largest producer of soybeans in the world, and sadly, they are almost entirely now GMO. More than 70% of soybeans cultivated in the country are from GE glyphosate-tolerant seed. A mere five states are responsible for 80% of Brazil’s soybean production; Rio Grande do Sul and Parana in the south, and Mato Grosso, Goîas, and Mato Grosso do Sul in the center-west region.
