OK, let’s recap a little bit. First we told you about the World Health Organization declaring that glyphosate — the main active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup pesticide — is probably carcinogenic to humans. This was a really big deal because Monsanto has been claiming for years that this stuff is completely harmless and as result, the whole world has dumped tens of millions of tons of this crap on itself.
Well, the next thing to happen in this ongoing chemical soap opera was for Monsanto to demand a retraction from WHO of its conclusion that glyphosate isn’t good for you.
WHO responded something like “stick it.”
This week the saga continues with multiple news outlets reporting that this “probably carcinogenic” glyphosate is being found in products we use everyday including honey, baby formula and even the breast milk of new moms. That’s scary stuff. Why is this happening?
According to Ken Cook, president and co-founder of Environmental Working Group, “When chemical agriculture blankets millions of acres of genetically engineered corn and soybean fields with hundreds of millions of pounds of glyphosate, it’s not a surprise babies are now consuming Monsanto’s signature chemical with breast milk and infant formula. The primary reason millions of Americans, including infants, are now exposed to this probable carcinogen is due to the explosion of genetically engineered crops that now dominate farmland across the U.S.”
Wow, sucks to be us. Too bad our country won’t ban or require labeling of GMOs like all the other nations of the civilized world.
So what happens next? Apparently we are getting ready to hear about a lot of additional foods that we eat being contaminated by this “probable” cancer-causer. According to Reuters, there has been a major increase in requests to have food products and people tested for glyphosate ever since the WHO report came out.
